Getting Your Jewelry Appraised

Aside from being a beautiful thing to wear, fine jewelry is a serious investment, and it’s important that investments be protected! Abracadabra offers certified appraisal services for fine jewelry. Appraisals are necessary to determine the current market value of a piece, which in turn is necessary to insure any piece of costly fine jewelry!

Simply set an appointment with us by using the form linked below, shoot us an email, or give us a call at 734.994.4848 to discuss the process. Once you’ve had us perform one appraisal on your piece, subsequent appraisal updates (which we recommend at least every two years or so) are half of the current rate for new appraisals. The appraisal process is outlined below.

Questions? We’re happy to help! We love helping people fully understand their jewelry, and are here for any questions about value definitions, gem testing, diamond grading, antique secondary markets… you name it!

PART ONE: BRING YOUR PIECE TO US!

We can’t evaluate a piece without spending some time inspecting it in person. We ask you to leave your piece with us in order to complete the appraisal. At this stage, we will discuss the purpose of the appraisal (ie. resale, insurance,) in order to determine the proper valuation. If you have any third-party laboratory reports, such as a GIA certificate, please bring it along to assist in the process.

PART TWO: FIRST INSPECTION

Your jewelry will be inspected for any damage or loose stone settings. We carefully clean your jewelry, then photograph it for inclusion in the final appraisal documents.

PART THREE: LABORATORY INSPECTION

Next, your jewelry is inspected in the lab for detailed quality and condition information. From this, we are able to determine and record the gemstone measurements, condition, color, clarity, cut, and quality, as well as identifying information such as laser inscription. We determine and record the mounting’s style, condition, and characteristics. Third-party documentation is reviewed and cross-checked.

PART FOUR: RESEARCH

At this point, we gather elements of the valuation such as pricing information and comparable sales, and analyze the current market. We then assign valuation based on the purpose and intended use of the appraisal that we established in step one.

The methods used in our research conform to American Gem Society standards.

PART FIVE: DELIVERY

We compile the detailed description, photograph, and valuation into a comprehensive appraisal document, which we then deliver to you! This is the document you will give to your insurance provider or reseller.
