One of the rarest and most cherished gemstones, Alexandrite was discovered in 1833 in the emerald mines of Russia’s Ural Mountain Range. It was named for Russian Czar Alexander II. It appears green in bright daylight, and plum red by night in warm light (such as that from a candle). Alexandrite is the modern birthstone for June.
